The bridge at Arnhem was one of several river crossing objectives of Operation MARKET GARDEN. Elements of the British 1st Airborne Division landed west town in gliders on 17 September 1944 and managed to hold the North approach of the Rhine River highway bridge until withdrawn on the 25th. Graphic 1 shows British positions at the bridge and destroyed German equipment on the road. Graphics 2 and 3 are different views of the glider landing zones on the 17th and 18th.
