Luftwaffe Glider Transport Unit at Brieg, Germany (Brzeg, Poland)

Eastern Front

A group of 12 Go 242 transport gliders (nine shown) were dispersed along a stream southwest of Brieg Airfield on 25 August 1944. The sighting of the aircraft is unusual and indicates an element of a Luftwaffe Luftlandgeschwader (LLG) was at the airfield, which usually supported reconnaissance units. There were two of the Geschwaders: based on the location, the aircraft at Brieg may have been from II/.LLG2, which was formed in 1942 at Posen (Poznan). The unit was deployed on the eastern Front through October 1943, when it was re-designated Schleppegruppe 3, finally disbanding at Posen in September 1944.
